It's so encouraging to see that coming out of the closet has finally become acceptable in the macho world of sports. Professional soccer player David Testo has come out in an interview with a Canadian radio program.
The former Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder tells CBC Radio-Canada that teammates knew he was gay and accepted him, but he was afraid to go public until now.
"It's like carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying around luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself," Testo told CBC.
"David Testo's declaration is in fact very personal," Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo said in a statement. "We knew David's orientation prior to him joining our club from Vancouver in 2007."
Testo last played for the Montreal Impact, but hasn't been offered a contract renewal for this season yet.
We've seen a ton of sports players stepping out of the closet lately. Let's hope the trend continues.
