Wait, Isn't 'Domino' the Same Song as 'Last Friday Night'?

JessieJKatyPerry.jpgI don't know why I'm continually surprised at the mundaneness of pop music -- I really should have learned by now. But I just can't get over the ridiculousness of "Domino," the new single from "Price Tag" songstress Jessie J, who is bisexual. The backing instrumentation on the song is insanely similar to "Last Friday Night," this year's smash hit from Katy Perry. Listen to both after the jump.

Both songs were produced by Katy Perry stronghold Dr. Luke, so it's no mistake that the songs sound so similar. But couldn't he at least have put a little bit of effort into creating a new song for Jessie J? After being slammed with "Last Friday Night" for months on end, do I really have to be bombarded by the same song for another few months? (Looks like the similarities don't bother many other people, as the song's been charting quite well).

This isn't the first time that two tracks created by the same producer for different singers has provoked a case of deja vu. Only a few years ago, Kelly Clarkson made a stir with her public annoyance at Ryan Tedder, the guy who produced her song "Already Gone," which uses almost the same backing arrangement as Beyonce's "Halo."

The Jessie J and Katy Perry similarities, however, haven't caused much of a stir on the Internet. A few bloggers noticed it this summer, when Jessie J released the album that features "Domino," but it's gotten little notice since then.

I guess that other people have just given up all confidence that pop music can be original. Count me in as the next quitter. Or maybe we can all hold out that radio stations just start playing the mash-up version of "Domino" and "Last Friday Night" - it's a pretty great compilation.

Videos and the mashup after the break.

Here's the original "Last Friday Night":
