One of the most contentious races in California this election cycle is between Democratic Assemblymember Betsy Butler and lesbian activist Torie Osborn for the newly created 50th Assembly District. Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom and Log Cabin Republican/LA President Brad Torgan are also competing for the seat.

Today all the candidates but Torgan (not invited because he's a Republican) will participate in the first forum to debate the issues at Malibu City Hall, 23815 Stuart Ranch Road, Malibu, sponsored by the Malibu Democratic Club. According to WeHo Patch, the club's regular meeting starts at 11:45 am, with the forum starting at 12:30 pm in the Multipurpose Room.

Butler and Osborn are the top-two contenders heading into the June 5 primary. The top two vote getters will then face off in November.
