Sunday Night's Academy Awards opened with a video featuring host Billy Crystal re-enacting scenes from nominated films. (That clip isn't posted yet but go here for other clips, photos and red carpet interviews; also see Towleroad and GregInHollywood for more coverage)Ed-Norton-kisses-Josh-Brolin-.jpg

At the top of the send-up is a shot of handsome famous straight actor George Clooney (soon to appear as Ted Olson in the AFER stage reading of "8") bending over and kissing someone in a hospital bed (from The Descendants.) Shock of shocks for the billion or so viewers - Clooney kisses Crystal on the mouth. Crystal, by the way, became famous in television for playing a gay guy on the ABC TV show Soap (1977-1981).

Ed Norton kisses Josh Brolin in Jimmy Kimmel movie trailer (Screen capture from "Movie: The Movie")

With all the Europeans winning last night, straight men enthusiastically grabbing for and joyfully kissing other men was de rigueur. And the joy was infectious. On another note, given the dominant image of Republican religious/conservative bellicosity perceived around the world - it was nice to see honors going to films from Iran and Pakistan. Earned honors in art serving as visual diplomacy.

But back to straight men kissing each other. After the Oscar telecast, comedian Jimmy Kimmel hosted his Oscar special featuring Oprah Winfrey. But he, too, had a video with tons of stars in cameo roles showcased in a trailer for Movie: The Movie.

In it, Antonio Banderas (who gained fame as Tom Hanks' partner in Philadelphia, 1993) is a priest who officiates at the gay wedding between the world's most dangerous secret agent (Ed Norton) and the President of the United States (Josh Brolin, reprising his role as "W").

Brolin says: "You complete me." (Reference to Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire)

Norton: "We complete each other and we complete America."

Bandaras: "You may kiss the spy."

No wonder the Religious Right hates Hollywood. The latest message from Tinseltown appears to be that it's OK for straight men to kiss each other.
