It appears that more and more elected officials are taking action to further the cause of LGBT equality and speaking out about the LGBT civil rights movement. After Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he supported a marriage equality plank in the Democratic Party platform, CNN’s Jessical Yellin wondered if same sex marriage could become “trouble” for the Democrats this election year. But it appears that elected officials such as Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley - who signed his state’s marriage equality bill on March 1 – aren’t taking that old Karl Rove bait. Indeed, as Rachel Maddow points out in this brief segment, O’Malley has integrated gay rights into the whole reason to vote FOR Democrats this year – using Religious Right darling Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (who just signed a bill forcing women to have a medically unnecessary ultrasound before having an abortion) as an example of the kind of ultra conservative voters get with this crop of Republicans.

Rachel interviewed O’Malley Thursday night about the inevitability of marriage equality and the dangers of putting minority rights up to a vote. Maryland is expected to face a referendum to repeal the marriage bill O’Malley just signed. Video after the break.
