After Maryland Catholic Father Marcel Guarnizo walked out a funeral service because the deceased woman's lesbian daughter participated, the nation reacted with outrage. It has been, hands down, the most popular and shared post on Bilerico Project this week. The story just viciously punches you in the stomach with the ugly face of religious bigotry.

The story spread like wildfire after one of the departed woman's friends wrote about it online and now the daughter, Barbara Johnson, is speaking out.

The Archdiocese of Washington has issued a formal apology to Johnson and admits that the priest was a Grade A asshole. In the statement, the Rev. Barry Knestout, one of the archdiocese's highest-ranking administrators, writes, "In my years as a priest, I have encountered many pastoral situations and know that kindness to those experiencing personal loss is a necessary part of the Church's call to charity. The fact that you did not experience this is a cause of great concern and personal regret to me... I am sorry that what should have been a celebration of your mother's life, in light of her faith in Jesus Christ, was overshadowed by a lack of pastoral sensitivity."

Last night Johnson appeared on Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. The video is after the break.
