"Those who are eager to see it would serve their cause better by not making a whole lot more noise, because it would taint the choice. Beyond some point it would discredit the person I pick if it looked like it was purely political or an appeal for cheap points. If I thought anybody -- male or female -- was going to make decisions based on gender or some other category, that would disqualify them immediately. Justice must be blind."

-- Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels on whether or not his third choice to the state supreme court will be a female. There has never been a woman on the state's highest court and is one of only three states without a female justice. Daniels has picked two judges already; the last one was his former chief counsel, Mark Massa. Critics rightly called it a political appointment.
