By the time this post publishes, I'll (hopefully) be halfway across the country bound for Las Vegas. I'm headed to the UNITY 2012 convention for minority journalists.

I've never been to the quadrennial conference and I'm curious to bigstock-Journalism-7394392.jpgsee how the various groups merge together. The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association has never been part of the UNITY conference before. When I joined the NLGJA board last year, my first vote was for the organization to accept the invitation to join.

I'll be writing about the conference while I'm there. I'm the first blogger to serve on the NLGJA board so I feel representative of citizen journalism. It will be interesting to see how the professional journalists react to a blogger. Will they consider me an equal or will the format of our platforms make a difference? And what differences or similarities will stand out with the other three journalists associations - which are based on racial minority status?

While I'm gone this week, James will be running the show behind the curtain. Patrick Hamilton has been nice enough to volunteer to be "Bilerico" this week and he'll be writing more often. Y'all love his posts so I don't have to tell you to play nice. You'll be in fine hands.

If you'd like to follow along with my UNITY exploits, you can follow me on Twitter or like my fan page on Facebook. It should, of course, be said that my thoughts and commentary are my own and not NLGJA's. You can follow along with the org blog here though.
