I'm not completely sure what inspired this week's post. West Side Story is by far one of my favorite musicals, and one of the greatest films ever made. But I can't say that "Somewhere," is the first song that pops to mind when I think of the show.
Usually, "America" jumps to the front of the line - but to have a sing-off, you need more than one cover.
So with my mind set on West Side Story, I started working my way through the tracks, and discovered that "Somewhere," is one of the most widely and successfully covered tracks from the show - with each version taking a completely different stylistic direction. I guess a bland song is much easier to sing out of context.
Thanks to YouTube and wikipedia, I have a greater appreciation for an often forgotten (by me at least) song. That is often a goal of these sing-off.
Other than the original, I only really new Barbra's version - which is great - but I am now in love with the Pet Shop Boys' cover. That is a "Somewhere" you can dance to!
Check out some of the most popular covers after the jump. Who do you think did it best? Are there any I missed? If so, give us the link in the comments.
