Mitt Romney's speech before a millionaire's club campaign stop has taken the political world by storm. In one part of it, he says that 47% of Americans are dependent on government handouts and will automatically vote for Obama to keep that cash rolling in.
He claims his role "is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." These people "believe that they are victims," he said.
So where exactly do these people live? I mean, after Romney's already lost the vote of most women, Latinos, African-Americans, and LGBT people, surely he's not going to do anything to alienate the white southern male vote, right?!?
The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees. As Bill Galston of the Brookings Institution has noted, the people who have benefited from the entitlements explosion are middle-class workers, more so than the dependent poor.
