Representative Tammy Baldwin is surging in the polls in Wisconsin. This is great news - not only for Wisconsin, but for every member of the LGBT community. We have had openly gay members of the House of Representatives for many years and they have played an important role in advancing LGBT legal equality. However, we have never had a United States senator who is an open member of our community, and Tammy Baldwin is poised to break that barrier.
Why is this important to you? The 100 members of the Senate comprise the most powerful legislative body on the planet. Because of the Senate's small numbers and the fact that senators are elected for a six year term, each senator has a much greater degree of influence than individual members of the House of Representatives. In addition, there is absolutely no substitute to having one of our own as a member of any political body.
Another important factor is that a Baldwin win may be the tipping point that keeps the Democrats in control of the United States Senate - critical for any continued progress towards achieving full LGBT legal equality in our lifetime. Regardless of where you live, this election in Wisconsin is going to effect your life.
Take a few minutes, get on the internet, and make a contribution to the Tammy Baldwin for Senate campaign. And if you have friends or family in Wisconsin, be sure to let them know why a win for Tammy Baldwin is so important to you.
If we all do our part, we will have one more big reason to celebrate on November 7.
