It didn't take long for Christian extremists to start blaming Hurricane Sandy's destructive impact on us LGBT people. Not that anyone could be surprised, fingers get pointed in our direction whenever there's a major disaster in the United States.

And frankly, I just don't get it.

If I was opposed to the rights and existence of a whole segment of society, I don't think I'd go around claiming that they had the power to destroy cities.

I'm 32 years old, so I was in college when 9/11 happened. After Jerry Falwell famously said

I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.

a college friend and year-mate Christine, who would later write for the college's satirical paper, responded to thusly

This is so cool! Who knew we had these super-powers? Now I know that next time I want to destroy a skyscraper, all I have to do is go fist my girlfriend.

Ever since then, it's all I can think of when I hear the LGBT community blamed for some new disaster or another. And now, here's what you need to know today:
