Two bad blows for LGBT people in Africa: After years of debate and derision from the world-at-large, Uganda's so-called "Kill the Gays Bill" will be law before the new year, according to Gay Star News. Similarly, Nigeria's legislative branch has advanced their own anti-homosexual law, which seems to have widespread support.

I must confess that I'm very much of two minds about the whole thing. The part of me that wants to check my white privilege and sense of American imperialism at the door feels like imposing our values on other nations and cultures is colonialist and irresponsible.

But at the same time, I am a gay/queer person. Moreover, I belong to possibly the last generation that had active and regular contact with survivors of the Nazi holocaust, who imparted their despair that the Allied powers didn't act sooner to stop the slaughter of innocents.

And as long as we're on the topic of colonialism, I'm a citizen of the same country as the hateful extremists who helped make this bill possible.

I remain unconvinced that stopping humanitarian aid to these countries is the best way to protect our brothers and sisters in Uganda, Nigeria, and other places where they are imprisoned or killed for being part of the global LGBT family, but I do believe that we have to find a way to do something.

And now, here's what else you need to know today:
