Sometimes, when I see things like this, it makes me want to throw something at the TV screen. Cissy Houston did an interview with Oprah to hawk her new book - a tell all mostly about her daughter, Whitney.
Cissy writes in her book that she's not sure whether or not Whitney had a lesbian relationship with her close friend, Robin. She is sure that she didn't like Robin and makes it quite clear that she would not be accepting if Whitney had come out to her.
This kind of shit drives me crazy. Cissy - who spent a large part of her career singing gospel songs about Christ's love - flat out says that she would reject her daughter if she'd come out of the closet.
We know that Whitney spent her adult years mired in drug addiction, depression, and saddled with a sad, lonely and abusive straight relationship. We also know that one of the leading causes of addiction and mental health issues among LGBT people is the stigma society and our families place on us. The closet is a lonely and harmful place.
And yet, her mother admits that she placed a higher priority on her bigoted beliefs, than she did on Whitney's mental health. I'm as flabbergasted as Oprah looks when Cissy offers up her rejection.
