It's no secret that I'm lacking the musical theater portion of my gay gene, but there is one show that I adore: Anything Goes.

When I was little I had an old record player and some 45s that came from God knows where. Two of them were songs from the musical.

"Anything Goes," "You're The Top!," and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" were personal favorites before I was old enough to realize that there was an entire show to go with the songs. Until I hit high school, I thought all the songs were by a band called "Anything Goes." Seriously.

Last week Jerame and I had a chance to go see the musical at the Kennedy Center. I'd never seen it live and neither of us had been inside the venerable theater. Since the tickets were deeply discounted, we snapped up the chance and went to check it out.

Jerame and I had watched the old black and white "Colgate Comedy Hour" television version available on YouTube, but he couldn't remember a single thing about the musical. It may be my favorite, but it didn't even register with him. The live performance, however, had him laughing out loud and tapping his toes.

When the cast really starts dancing during "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" gets roaring, he turned to me and quietly said, "They dance a lot in this show." I replied, "That's what you said during the TV version too."

Here's something you won't forget as we head into the weekend... Jonathan Groff performing the female role during last march's Miscast Gala to belt out the musical's most famous number. After all, it's the weekend. Anything goes.
