I realize that support for LGBT issues is much much lower in the Middle East and most Islamic countries. But as Islamaphobia has swept the country since the 9/11 terror attacks, I've often considered how my own experiences don't match that stereotype.
When I led the charge for Indianapolis' fully inclusive human rights ordinance, I spent quite a bit of time speaking with the local imam and convincing a Muslim city councilor to vote for LGBT rights. In the end, he was the vote that put us over the top.
Indianapolis' Congressman, Andre Carson, is a black Muslim. Minnesota's Representative Keith Ellison is also a black Muslim. Both are some of our community's most vocal supporters.
Now Ellison has released this video from his Congressional office to celebrate the start of marriage equality in Minnesota. Not only does he send along his well wishes, he strums out a little tune on the guitar: This Land Is My Land. (Although when did it become the RedWING forest instead of the RedWOOD forests?)
