Regular Bilerico Project readers may remember a post I wrote back in June about a threat from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to de-fund several Illinois groups that serve the poor because of their membership in the pro-marriage equality Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
I wrote that, should the U.S. bishops make good on their threat, it would prove yet again that the Catholic Church "is willing to actively hurt immigrants and the poor, just so they can momentarily prolong marriage discrimination and stick it to the gays and lesbians one more time."
Well, CBS 2 Chicago is now reporting that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the U.S. bishops' anti-poverty and social justice program, has indeed cut off funds to those groups.
Cardinal Francis George is coming under heavy fire from local Catholic elected officials and community leaders, who are accusing him of cynically using immigrants as "pawns in a political battle" over marriage equality. But George has refused to back down.
The leaders of the Catholic Church will stop at literally nothing to hurt LGBT people, couples, and families, regardless of whether they hurt anyone else in the process. What an abominable disgrace.
