"Italian constitutional law safeguards an individual's religious feeling and the function of places of worship. Therefore photos that are not suitable and do not conform to the spirituality of the place offend and infringe upon the advancement of man in the particular place for the expression of faith."

-- Claudio Tanturri, spokesman for the Vicariate of Rome (an administrative division of the Catholic Diocese of Rome), explaining a Vatican threat to bring legal action against a gallery in Rome if it went ahead with a planned exhibition last week featuring photographs of couples -- including same-sex couples -- kissing in churches. Rather than risking a lawsuit, the gallery took the photos down.
