booker_new_jersey_marriages.jpgThere was joy in the air in New Jersey at 12:01 this morning as same-sex couples across that state began to legally wed for the first time.

The mood at Newark City Hall was equally festive: Newark mayor and New Jersey senator-elect Cory Booker, who refused to officiate at any weddings until all loving couples were able to marry, was scheduled to wed nine same-sex couples. First up were LGBT advocate Orville Bell and retired advertising executive Joseph Panessidi.

The brief ceremony started as soon as the clock struck 12:01. Booker asked, as required by law, whether anyone present knew of any reason why Joseph and Orville should not be married. That's when an anti-gay fundamentalist Christian heckler interrupted the proceedings, screaming out, "This is unlawful in the sight of God!"

Booker had the heckler -- who continued shouting -- removed, and he proceeded to spank him brilliantly. "Not hearing any substantive, worthy objections, I will now proceed," Booker said. The crowd cheered.

(Side note: anyone who stays up late on a work night, drives down to city hall, and lurks among supportive wedding guests for the sole purpose of sabotaging others' nuptials is an ugly, pathetic human being.)

Video of the exchange is after the jump.
