Given the vehemence of his personal crusade against marriage equality, I've often wondered if Springfield, Illinois Catholic bishop Thomas Paprocki just might be protesting too much, if you know what I mean. He'd hardly be the first high-profile gay homophobe, after all, and the Catholic priesthood has for generations been a refuge for gay men who don't want to a.) enter a loveless opposite-sex marriage or b.) remain unmarried but contend with lifelong speculation about their sexuality.

As many of you know, marriage equality officially became law in Illinois yesterday, and Bishop Paprocki held an exorcism service in protest. It was a packed house, and the prelate pulled out all the stops -- including speaking in Latin, commanding "be gone, Satan," and donning some of the most faaaabulous clerical attire I've seen in a long time -- I'm talking garments that'd make Pope Benedict blush.

Take a look at a photo of Paprocki's deep purple-blue vestments, from a press conference held immediately after the service. (Photo via The New Civil Rights Movement.) I don't know about you, but it certainly led me to wonder: might those sumptuous robes be concealing a swish in the bishop's step?

A brief video of the press conference is after the jump.
