Like eating corn flake crumbs on top of ice cream, Drag Queens & Covered Bridges are two things that just shouldn't go together, but somehow enhance each others' awesomeness when combined.
Reddit user /u/robot-notes has created a unique photo project, which is available as a wall calendar, postcard set, and as a download for Android phones. The imagery is vibrant, whimsical, and manages to capture the essence of both drag photography and covered bridge photography, which is a popular genre here in northern New England.
The whole thing is a beautiful love letter to New Hampshire from someone who only just recently relocated to the state. New Hampshire is my favorite place I ever lived, and there is something just perfectly representative of the state and its cultural dichotomy in what's been captured in these photos.
But it wasn't always smooth sailing. New Hampshire can be a more conservative and reserved place than many people outside of New England realize, and not everyone was on board with their project
The owners of the only bridge with a railroad in New Hampshire, Clark's Trading Post Bridge, the one I wanted to use, changed their minds on allowing me to shoot on their property, when I told them the model would be a drag queen. When another owner denied me permission because his bridge was a "wholesome place," I drove away weeping; I didn't know those two words could strike so hard.
Fortunately, the artist and their models had positive experiences too
Up in Conway, a father and his daughter interrupted my shoot with Laila McQueen. The little girl was absolutely convinced it was a photoshoot with Lady Gaga!
More than most places in America, New Hampshire embodies radically different expressions of American culture. As a former resident of that state, I've tried many times to explain what life is like there, but /u/robot-notes has accomplished with twelve pictures far more than can be accomplished with words alone.
