coming_out_to_mom.pngA touching video is making the rounds on social media that shows a young man named Ryan coming out as gay to his mother for the first time.

Ryan writes about why he decided to capture this moment on film and share it with the world:

I made this video because when I was contemplating coming out for the last year, I found other similar videos of people coming out to family members on a hidden camera really helpful. I noticed that there weren't very many of these videos, so I wanted to create my own to help other people in the same way that I found these videos helpful. If you've created a similar one, I guarantee you I've seen it, so thank you so much for helping me. My mom reacted in an amazing way, and I really hope that all of you have a similar experience.

Ryan's video is after the jump. As you watch it, remember that you're viewing his mother's unvarnished reaction, and like many parents who've grown up exposed to anti-gay stereotypes and blissfully unaware of heterosexual privilege, it isn't perfect. At one point she says that she doesn't like Pride parades because she "[doesn't] think people should broadcast their sexuality," and she very honestly admits that she can't personally relate to being gay.

But her underlying message is the one that all LGBT kids in this situation pray they'll hear: "That's okay... sweetie, I'll always love you."

What's your coming-out story? Did videos of others coming out help give you the courage to take that step in your own life? Would they have made coming out easier?
