Brokeback Author Annie Proulx adapted her heartbreakingly beautiful story of forbidden love between two gay cowboys for the operatic stage, and American composer Charles Wuorinen set Proulx's libretto to music. The work was completed in 2012 after being commissioned by the now-defunct New York City Opera, but its planned premiere was postponed after the company's general director, Gerard Mortier, resigned.

Mortier brought the project to Madrid, where it was taken up by the Teatro Real. The opera premieres on January 28 and runs through February 11 -- click here to buy tickets.

Here's hoping the opera has a successful first run and a production is mounted in the United States. I'd love to see it!
