Chris_Christie_at_townhall.jpegChris Christie, the scandal-plagued governor of New Jersey, today vetoed A-4097/S-2786, a measure that would have allowed trans New Jerseyans the right to correct their birth certificates to reflect their accurate gender.

New Jersey On-Line reports that the bill would have

"...[required] a new birth record for people who have undergone 'clinically appropriate treatment for the purpose of gender transition, based on contemporary medical standards, or that the person has an intersex condition.' The person's licensed health care provider would have to sign a form vouching the treatment had taken place."

In other words, under the bill, trans people would not have to undergo costly gender reassignment surgery in order to obtain an accurate birth certificate.

Christie's veto was absolute, meaning that he rejected the law outright (as opposed to sending it back to the legislature with proposed amendments). A 2/3 vote to override Christie's veto in both houses of the legislature is now required in order for the measure to become law -- 27 votes in the Senate and 54 votes in the general assembly.

Ugh, what a bully.
