why-we-need-marriage-equality.jpgEarlier this month, Argentinian filmmaker Rodolfo Moro and his partner, computer technician Marcos Duszczak, released a compelling YouTube video called "Why We Need" that calls on the governments of the world to pass laws protecting LGBT people and families.

The video dramatizes a story that LGBT people in many countries are all too familiar with. Viewers meet a family of two moms and their son. One of the women suffers a major medical emergency and is taken to the hospital. Her partner's biological family is admitted into the hospital room, while she is barred from entering and watches helplessly from the hallway as her partner's mother tells the doctor to take her off life support. Later, the mother and two police officers visit the couple's home and take the child away.

It closes by saying: "Our families have existed forever. We don't ask for your permission to live our lives. We demand a law protecting our families with the respect and dignity they deserve."

After Argentina legalized marriage equality in 2011, Moro and Duszczak decided to conduct interviews with LGBT people about what their lives were like before the law passed, and how having equal marriage rights helps their families. That project turned into a documentary, "Familias por Igual" (Families Like Yours), that's received critical acclaim and screenings in cities across Argentina and Spain, as well as Mexico City, Dallas, and New York.

In addition to calling attention to the heartbreaking experiences facing many LGBT families around the world, Moro and Duszczak hope to use "Why We Need" as a launching pad for the next documentary they're planning, about the push for marriage equality in the United States.

Watch "Why We Need," after the jump.
