annise-parker-wedding-2014.jpgWedding bells rang yesterday for Annise Parker (on the right in the photo), the openly gay mayor of Houston, who married her longtime partner Kathy Hubbard in California.

USA Today reports:

Parker, who was recently sworn in to a third term, and Hubbard have been together for 23 years. The couple got married in Palm Springs, Calif., where same-sex marriage is legal.

"This is a very happy day for us," Parker said in a statement released by the city. "We have had to wait a very long time to formalize our commitment to each other. Kathy has been by my side for more than two decades, helping to raise a family, nurture my political career and all of the other ups and down and life events that come with a committed relationship."

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which will bring up to 4,000 LGBT activists to Houston later this month for its annual Creating Change conference, responded in a statement from executive director Rea Carey:

"Congratulations to Mayor Annise Parker and Kathy Hubbard on their marriage. Mayor Parker is an extraordinary leader for freedom and justice for all. We look forward to seeing her at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's Annual Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change in Houston, Texas, January 29 - February 2, 2014."

Congratulations indeed to these two wonderful women as they begin their marriage journey. I hope this is just the first of many happy years together as legally wedded spouses!

If you'd like to send wedding wishes to the couple, you can do so on Mayor Parker's Facebook page.
