luxembourg-map.gifThe tiny European nation of Luxembourg -- a landlocked Grand Duchy smaller than the U.S. state of Rhode Island -- is poised to pass marriage equality this summer, according to two government officials there.

From the Luxemburger Wort für Wahrheit und Recht:

The Luxembourg LGBT association Rosa Lëtzebuerg Asbl has welcomed news that the marriage "for all of us" - "same sex" marriage could be legal before the end of 2014.

Luxembourg Justice Minister Félix Braz announced on Wednesday that the government would vote on the bill this summer and, if approved, it could mean wedding bells for same sex couples before the end of the year.

LGBTQ Nation reports that Viviane Loschetter, president of the Parliamentary Committee on Justice, confirmed this in an interview with Luxembourg's main national media outlet. The proposed marriage equality bill also reportedly includes adoption rights for same-sex couples.

LGBT Luxembourgers have been able to enter into civil partnerships since 2004. A poll conducted last year found that 83% of Luxembourg citizens supported granting same-sex couples the freedom to marry. The country's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel; and Deputy Prime Minister, Etienne Schneider; are both openly gay.

If the law passes, Luxembourg will join fellow Benelux nations Belgium and the Netherlands in the marriage equality column, along with eight other European nations (Denmark, France, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the UK).

Michael and I visited Luxembourg's capital (also named Luxembourg) on our 2009 European backpacking trip. It's incredibly picturesque, and would be a perfect place for a destination wedding! A few photos from our trip are after the jump.
