Westboro Baptist Church -- the Topeka, Kansas-based cult of homophobic extremists that the Southern Poverty Law Center calls "the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America" -- is an utterly reprehensible den of prejudice. Their "God Hates Fags" brand of bigotry has inspired visceral disgust across the country and around the world.
And yet, as society moves ever further towards LGBT acceptance and WBC's hateful views are relegated to the extreme fringes of the extreme fringe, they're becoming something else: an eyeroll-inducing, outrage-trolling, attention-seeking caricature.
Perhaps the best evidence of this (that I've seen, anyway) comes from the church's Vine. Just in case you're not aware, Vine is a "micro-video" app that allows users to create and upload six-second looping video clips to Twitter and Facebook.
Naturally, WBC has adopted this new medium as yet another platform to spread their hate. But some of their video loops aren't so much hateful as comical.
Does Westboro Baptist Church know they're nothing but a joke? Check out a selection of their Vines after the jump and let us know what you think. Warning: they still contain WBC's usual awful language and infamous signs, so don't click through if you're easily offended.
