mike-vogt.jpgMike Vogt, a longtime Bilerico reader and commenter from Indiana, died suddenly over the weekend. The cause of death is still unknown.

Many of you know Mike only from his comments on the site, but I was lucky enough to know him in real life and, after moving to DC, we still communicated via Facebook. He was always the first person to respond to anything I posted that indicated I was in a bad mood; his easy smile and cheerful words never failed to make a horrible day much better.

With last night's announcement of Mike's passing, today is a horrible day indeed. Sadly, Mike isn't around to make it better. Rest in peace, my friend.

Mike's brother posted the statement below to Mike's Facebook page late last night.

To the friends of Mike Vogt on his behalf from his very sad brother Scott:

At approximately 8pm central time last evening I received a call from the Indianapolis PD that they had found Mike, my beloved older but younger at heart brother, in his bed unresponsive and that he had passed away.

I know many of you have asked what happened and was Mike ill. We truly do not know what happened at this point. The Marion County coroner is conducting an autopsy which will hopefully provide some clue as to what happened.

I have been very touched by the outpouring of love and sympathy for my brother shown by all of his friends and acquaintances. It has been truly overwhelming for me to read.

We are still very much in the early stages of coping and trying to make sense of this (which is my sad attempt at demanding understanding of something that will likely never be understood). Arrangements for a visitation and a funeral have not yet been made, but we will be working on that tomorrow.

Please learn from my mistake and make sure you tell your brothers and sisters that you love them and care for them cause you truly don't know when the last time you will have that opportunity.

Thanks again for your kind words, thoughts and prayers.

Scott Vogt
