marriage-primer-animation-ancient.jpgOne of the most enduring right-wing anti-LGBT talking points is the one about how same-sex couples are seeking to change an institution that's existed in the same form for thousands of years.

It's utter bullshit -- marriage is constantly evolving across cultures, societies, and centuries -- but this sound bite nonetheless keeps showing up in legislative debates, sermons, and at dinner tables across the country.

The next time you hear this tired trope, consider sending your misinformed conversation partner a link to this video. It's a four-minute mini TED Talk from a man named Alex Gendler tracing the long and convoluted history of marriage through the entirety of humanity's existence. If you liked Betty Bowers's video explaining "traditional marriage" but need something that's a little more secular and a tad less irreverent, this is the video for you.

Watch, after the jump.
