Standout University of Missouri defensive lineman and likely NFL draft pick Michael Sam made headlines earlier this week when he came out as gay. Although some anonymous voices in the NFL have criticized Sam's decision to tell his truth, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive.
Of course, it was only a matter of time before America's favorite late night personalities got in on the story as well. On her show last night, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow devoted her "Best New Thing in the World Today" segment to a chilly but heartwarming tribute that Sam's classmates at Mizzou made to show him their support.
And of course, late-night comedy guru Jon Stewart not only celebrated Sam's coming out, but also mocked the idea that gay people somehow make inferior football players ("It's as though sexual orientation has nothing to do with physical strength!"), the ridiculously misplaced anti-gay locker room fears, and the hypocrisy of NFL officials claiming the NFL isn't ready for the "controversy" of a gay athlete when they seemingly have no problem with actually controversial things like criminal convictions.
As usual, it's hilarious. Check it out, after the jump.
