451px-Joe_Scarborough.jpgIs conservative MSNBC host Joe Scarborough mulling a bid for the presidency in 2016? Republican operatives and network executives seem to the think he is.

With the GOP field in disarray, is a campaign by the former Florida Congressman that far-fetched?

Here is the thinking behind a Scarborough bid:

  • The field is wide open.
  • Republicans won't nominate a senator. They want a D.C. outsider.
  • Scarborough would perform well in debates, which mattered in the 2012 contest.
  • Scarborough, through his recent book, has offered a blueprint for reform for the GOP.

There are just as many hurdles for Scarborough that would likely be turnoffs in a Republican nominating contest: His show represents the thinking of the Washington and New York political elite. He works for a liberal news network. He's been divorced twice. He resigned from Congress.

Scarborough resigned his office in 2001 to spend more time with his kids, saying "The realization has come home to me that they're at a critical stage of their lives and I would rather be judged at the end of my life as a father than as a congressman."

Now the children's future seems to figure into his decision on the presidential race. In an interview with The Daily Caller last November, the MSNBC host said, "I suspect in the future -- if that happens again -- and I feel the calling to do it, I'll do it with the one hesitation -- that I got a 10-year-old girl who has said I can't do it until she's out of high school. I don't know if I'm going to make it that long."

Scarborough has admitted that he wrote his new book with the 2016 presidential campaign in mind. The book is titled The Right Path: From Ike to Reagan, How Republicans Once Mastered Politics - and Can Again.

So what do you think? Will he run? Or is this just ginned-up publicity to sell his new book?
