Last night at the Academy Awards, actor Jared Leto won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Rayon, a trans character in the AIDS drama Dallas Buyers Club.

Leto's acceptance speech, which included a shout-out of solidarity to anti-government protesters in Ukraine and Venezuela, ended with touching words for the LGBT community and people who've died of AIDS:

"And this is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I stand here in front of the world with you and for you. Thank you so much and goodnight."

My first reaction to Leto's speech was that I found it moving, but then again I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club and consequently am unfamiliar with his portrayal of Rayon. Many of my friends who have seen the film -- particularly many of my trans-idenfitifed friends -- were less than impressed with Leto's character, his speech, or that he was given the Oscar at all.

What are your thoughts on Rayon, Dallas Buyers Club, Leto's speech, and the Academy's selection of him as best supporting actor? Share them below. Since I've already seen threads on Facebook become quite heated over this topic, though, I'll remind everyone of the Bilerico comment policy:

So no personal attacks, anti-trans or other slurs, etc. With that in mind, sound off!
