muppet-christ-superstar.jpgIntroducing Muppet Christ Superstar, a reimagining of the 1971 hit rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar where the lead characters are Muppets. Naturally, Kermit is Jesus and Miss Piggy is Mary (well, Piggy) Magdalene. Gonzo plays Judas, Fozzie Bear is Simon the Zealot, and Rowlf the Dog plays King Herod.

It's basically amazing. The voices are all performed by Christo Graham, a 20-year-old songwriter and a drama and film student in Quebec, Canada. He recorded the album in his bedroom. Slate's Lara Zarum writes:

"My family sort of joked about this album happening for years," Graham explained. He and his four siblings were fans of both Jesus Christ Superstar and the Muppets, and putting the two together just seemed like a natural fit. Certain lines are tweaked to fit in the Muppet universe--on "Pepe's Dream," the prawn dreams of meeting "an amphibian" instead of "a Galilean"--but others remain the same, resulting in a hilarious blend of two worlds. On some songs, the combination seems almost preordained: On "Herod's Song," sung by Rowlf the Dog, the words "fan" and "man" are logically replaced with "dog" and "frog": "I am waiting, yes I'm a captive dog/ I'm dying to be shown that you're not just any frog."

Muppet Christ Superstar is after the jump. If you can't get enough of Christo Graham, he's appearing this summer at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Graham also hopes to record another parody album, this time of Louis Armstrong singing modern-day pop hits like "Wrecking Ball."

I can't wait.
