franklin-graham-easter-sunday-bashing-abc.jpgYesterday -- Easter Sunday -- ABC News decided to devote a segment of its weekly news program This Week to a discussion of the most toxic Christian movement in America, the Religious Right. Predictably, the segment devolved into a vile on-air gay-bashing.

Because nothing says "He is Risen!" like "God hates fags," amirite?

The panel featured Franklin Graham, the bigoted right-wing extremist and heir to evangelist Billy Graham; Ralph Reed, the disgraced former head of Pat Robertson's Christian Coalition; and Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

Host Martha Raddatz started things off by reading Pope Francis's conciliatory words about gay priests and contrasting them with recent remarks by Franklin Graham expressing support for Russian president Vladimir Putin's draconian anti-LGBT crackdown and lying that gays "recruit" children.

"Do you still support Putin?" Raddatz asked. Graham said he believed Putin was doing what's best for Russia -- and that was the only major point on which the panelists disagreed.

The rest of the time was spent spouting baseless and thoroughly discredited Regnerus-style talking points about how "social science" states that kids do best with married straight parents. Of course, this claim has been repeatedly debunked by the American Sociological Association and the "researcher" whose "study" reached this conclusion was laughed out of federal court last month as "entirely unbelievable and not worthy of serious consideration," but why should facts matter, right?

Reed further claimed that "the social science is just simply not in yet on same-sex couples." This too is a bald-faced lie, as it actually says the opposite: children of same-sex couples fare just as well as those of opposite-sex couples.

While neither Raddatz nor journalist Cokie Roberts smacked down the dangerously false "kids do best with a mom and a dad" lie, Roberts did push back against the implication that Russian children were better off in orphanages than they would be with same-sex parents.

"Reverend" Franklin Graham did hold out a candle of hope for the souls of all those evil, hell-bound homoseckshuls, though: all they have to do is stop being gay and they can go to heaven. "Franklin Graham is a sinner," he said. "I'm no better than a gay person."

Happy Easter, everyone!

Watch the segment, after the jump. The conversation about homosexuality begins at the 5:00 mark.
