chad-griffin-morningjoe.jpgChad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Monday. Griffin was in studio to discuss HRC's new "Project One America" campaign, a major part of the LGBT civil rights movement's strategic pivot towards the Deep South.

Instead of focusing on this important new initiative, though, the bulk of the segment ended up being spent discussing Forcing the Spring, the controversial new book that chronicles the legal fight against California's Proposition 8 and portrays Griffin himself as the seminal figure in the marriage equality movement.

MSNBC contributor and Republican political strategist Nicolle Wallace, who previously served as a spokesperson for AFER (the organization co-founded by Griffin that brought the case against Proposition 8), questioned him about the controversy and weighed in with her own observations.

"I think what was so interesting to me was to see how raw nerves were within the [LGBT] movement -- that there were activists who were so offended by the attention paid to what I think a lot of people on the outside thought was a pretty important chapter."

The three-and-a-half-minute conversation finally took a decisive turn towards discussion of the push for southern equality around the 2:30 mark.

Watch, after the jump.
