fergus-irish-soccer-star.jpgCathal McCarron, a 25-year-old Irish Gaelic football star, is facing a torrent of anti-gay harassment after he allegedly appeared in two gay-for-pay porn videos posted to (Link NSFW), an adult pay-per-view website. McCarron has not confirmed or denied appearing in the videos, but he has deleted his Facebook and Twitter accounts due to the abuse he's received.

From the Sunday World:

The adult film is opely available on a well known pay-only gay porn site where 'straight men' are convinced to engage in sex acts for cash. It was posted online within the last month and includes an interview with the young man to camera.

Before the video begins, the talented GAA star - who now plays with London GAA after emigrating from the north - can be heard discussing his sexual preferences.

In the first video he reportedly performs solo, but in the second he has sex with another man.

As often happens in stories like this, the homophobes crawl out of the woodwork: trolls on Twitter are relentlessly mocking McCarron with anti-gay slurs under the hashtag #fergus, the pseudonym under which he allegedly performed. Some users have also posted messages of support for the football star.

The Irish Mirror reports that McCarron is known to have struggled with a gambling addiction in the past, and that friends and neighbors are worried about him.

A former neighbour told the Irish Mirror: "Everyone is shocked and stunned. No one can believe it and everyone is devastated for him.

"It's a very sad story for Cathal. He's had so many issues and he must be in a very bad place. We all hope he can pull through this."...

A GAA star who played against him when he was on the Tyrone squad added: "I am devastated for him.

"He's such a sound lad and he dealt with a lot of issues in the past and we were all thinking London was his fresh start.

"But now we're just all wondering what could have pushed him to this. You can't help but feel for the lad. I mean, what must he have been thinking and what must he be thinking now? It's a sad situation really."

Here's hoping that if McCarron is indeed having mental health issues, he's able to get the help he needs. Regardless of his mental state, though, the vile outpouring of abuse directed at him shows just how far Ireland and the UK still have to go in combating homophobia.
