wisconsin_satellite.jpgThe Democratic members of Wisconsin's congressional delegation are asking Attorney General Eric Holder to recognize for federal purposes all legal same-sex marriages in the state performed between June 6, when a federal judge struck down the state's constitutional marriage discrimination amendment, and June 13, when she stayed her ruling as the state appeals it.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

In a letter U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin and U.S. Reps. Ron Kind, Gwen Moore and Mark Pocan suggested that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder extend federal recognition to couples married in the week after a judge struck down the state's ban on gay marriage.

"These loving couples have valid marriage licenses and should receive the same federal recognition that all other married Wisconsin couples currently do," the letter said...

The Democrats said they hope Holder will extend access to benefits including federal taxes, immigration, federal employee and service member benefits, and family and medical leave to Wisconsin's legally married same-sex couples.

Baldwin, Kind, Moore, and Pocan note that the administration has extended federal recognition to same-sex marriages performed during similar marriage equality windows in Utah and Michigan, and they ask for LGBT couples in Wisconsin to receive the same treatment. "We ask that you similarly declare that those same-sex couples who married in Wisconsin since the June 6 decision are equally entitled to the federal benefits they deserve," their letter to Holder says.
