Matt Baume of the American Foundation for Equal Rights is out with his latest installment of Marriage News Watch, a helpful regular YouTube video series where Baume runs down the list of marriage equality news from across the country.
In this video, Baume says equality advocates should get ready for a flood of court rulings in marriage cases across the country. He writes:
In just the last year, 22 courts have overturned state bans on marriage equality. And with numerous upcoming hearings, that number is likely to climb into the 30s within a few weeks... Rulings are due [this month] in Florida, Virginia and Oklahoma.
In addition, eight other states will have hearings before appellate courts. Those include Michigan, Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii and more. If the courts rule swiftly enough, those cases could all arrive at the Supreme Court in time for its next session.
Watch Matt's helpful video recap below, with the caveat that, thanks to the lightning-fast speed of marriage equality news these days, it's already slightly out of date: yesterday, that Pennsylvania clerk's bid to defend marriage discrimination was rebuffed by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito (I know, right?) and a state judge struck down Colorado's same-sex marriage ban.
But despite the new developments, it's an informative video nonetheless. Enjoy!
