thomas-downton-abbey.jpgDownton Abbey star Rob James-Collier, who plays gay under-butler Thomas Barrow on the hit PBS series, revealed in a recent interview with the Daily Mail that his character's storyline will take a "harrowing" turn in the upcoming season, not just questioning his sexual orientation but trying to change it -- with what the Mail describes as "devastating consequences":

James-Collier, 37, who plays scheming under-butler Thomas Barrow, reveals that his character's tortured homosexuality will come to the fore in the new series...

James-Collier said: "It's quite a harrowing storyline and I hope it is. Because if it isn't, I haven't done it justice. There are mornings of those scenes when you haven't been able to sleep at night because you are so worried about how it will go. Thomas comes right up to the abyss."

Speaking with Metro, he added:

"In this series, because of an event, for the first time he reflects and turns it inwards on himself and questions his sexuality -- whether or not he would, or could, be happy staying as a homosexual. He goes on a traumatic path to find out whether he can truly be who he is. It's quite an emotional story line, and hopefully quite gripping."

Season 5 of Downton Abbey premieres this Sunday in the UK and in the United States on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 9 P.M. Eastern. Watch the official trailer, after the break.
