coronado-wedding1.jpgOscar De Las Salas and Gary Jackson -- the gay couple from Arizona whose dream wedding last August was turned into a nightmare by a homophobic heckler -- got a do-over ceremony on Saturday, U-T San Diego reports. And by the looks of things, it was fabulous:

Coronado's finest came out by the hundreds Saturday to celebrate the union of de Las Salas and Jackson, the Phoenix couple whose August wedding at Centennial Park was marred by a heckler yelling homophobic slurs from a nearby balcony.

No one confronted the intruder that afternoon, but the experience put an ugly stain on what was supposed to be the moment of a lifetime for two people in love. It also made headlines from coast to coast.

The incident so troubled Coronado attorney Alisa Kerr that she couldn't stand by and do nothing. She contacted de Las Salas by email and invited him and his husband to return to Coronado for a do-over service.

"It's not about publicity or gay marriage," Kerr said about why she organized the renewal of vows. "It's about being kind to everyone, which I think Coronado residents generally demonstrate."

More, after the break.

coronado-wedding2.jpgAs we reported earlier this month here at Bilerico, Kerr gathered a group of friends together and began soliciting donations from equality-minded citizens and businesses. The community rallied, and by the time Jackson and De Las Salas's big day arrived, the entire ceremony was paid for.

"This all happened in 2½ weeks, with no budget, for strangers who are now friends," Kerr told U-T San Diego. "That is really significant."

Jackson and De Las Salas agreed, with Jackson describing the evening as "crazy, wonderful" just before the start of the ceremony. "Coming out here now is a reaffirmation," he said. "It's a strong message, and it says a lot about the community."

Indeed it does. Congratulations to the happy couple, and kudos to Coronado, California for showing us what can happen when people show kindness to one another.
