pam-bondi.jpgYesterday Pam Bondi, the anti-gay Republican Attorney General of Florida, asked the Sunshine State's Supreme Court to settle the issue of marriage equality.

The move is an abrupt departure from previous court filings, where she demanded a freeze on same-sex marriage rulings until the U.S. Supreme Court had a chance to decide the matter. The Court decided last week not to do so, opting instead to allow pro-marriage equality rulings in five U.S. states to stand.

Reuters reports:

"Florida's citizens need a definitive answer, and they need it sooner rather than later," Bondi, a Republican, wrote in a filing to the state's Third District Court of Appeal. Bondi asked the Miami court to allow two same-sex marriage cases in south Florida to move to the state Supreme Court.

This summer judges in separate rulings across Florida declared the state's 2008 gay marriage ban unconstitutional. The rulings were stayed pending the outcome of appeals by Bondi, who defended the ban.

Indeed, Florida's marriage discrimination amendment was struck down a whopping five times last summer in state and federal court.

Nadine Smith, CEO of statewide LGBT group Equality Florida, welcomed Bondi's move but pointed out that she and Republican Governor Rick Scott continue to defend the state's discriminatory marriage ban in court, at taxpayer expense.

"Nearly two-thirds of the country now live in a state that values equality," Smith said in a press release. "How much longer must loving couples in Florida wait to protect their families? Now is the time for AG Bondi and Gov Scott to step on the right side of history and not let Florida go down in history as one of the last states to uphold the principles of fairness."
