save-benjy.PNGAnd now, for some gratuitous tugging on the heartstrings...

Meet Benjy. A Charolais bull, Benjy lives in Ireland, where he was purchased by a farmer in Mayo County for breeding. The farmer discovered, though, that Benjy isn't interested in female cows, but in male ones.

Because he hasn't bred successfully, the farmer was going to send him to the slaughterhouse. But an animal rights group is hoping to raise enough funds to save his life and send him to an animal sanctuary, the Irish Independent reports:

An animal protection group has launched a bid to save Benjy the gay bull who is destined for slaughter because of his penchant for other bulls. The Animal Rights Action Network (Aran) is fundraising £5,000 (€6327) to have him re-homed in an animal sanctuary in the UK...

Aran has paired with online gay magazine TheGayUK to raise the funds to re-home Benjy in the Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

"The plight of little Benjy is hitting the hearts and households of Irish society with the reality of what will face this innocent boy if someone somewhere doesn't step in," Aran's John Carmody said.

"As a gay man myself, I know only too well what it is like to be treated indifferently, that's why I hope we can give Benjy a second chance in life whilst helping to bring attention to the problems facing all gay people everywhere around the world, and of course the many other Benjy's that are brought to slaughter on a daily basis who are not so lucky."

More, after the break.

Campaigners hope to send Benjy to Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norwich, England, which the Times says is a haven for "unwanted, ill-treated and neglected animals."

They've launched a crowdfunding page to raise the money for Benjy's rescue, and as of this writing they're a little more than halfway towards their goal. They have until December 10 to raise the funds, and they're hoping to have him rescued by Christmas.

The organizers write:

TheGayUK, along with Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) from Ireland and Hillside Animal Sanctuary have forged a plan to save Benjy the gay Bull, who is facing certain death after he failed to show interest in mating with the females in the herd. Benjy made headlines this week after reports that he faces certain death because he is gay...

We hope to raise £5,000 to buy Benjy and have him re-homed within the Hillside Animal Sanctuary where he'll be looked after till the natural end of his life.

Homosexuality in nature is widely observed. In fact same-sex attraction is noted in over 1,500 species. Most recently two male penguins became the talk of the town after the zoo in which they are housed called them the 'best parents they had ever seen'.

Your money will help us to buy Benjy from his owner, have him vetted and transported to the Hillside Sanctuary where they've been looking after suffering farm animals since 1995.

Heartbreakingly sweet, right? Just wait until you see the organizers' video:
