For the last week or so, reports have been flying that football player Michael Sam -- who made history last year when he became the first openly gay NFL draft pick -- became engaged to his longtime boyfriend Vito Cammissano.

Today Sam confirmed the news, tweeting out a photo of the proposal. But the "where" of this story is almost as awesome as the "what," because Sam popped the question in Vatican city, on top of St. Peter's Basilica -- the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, one of the world's most passionately outspoken opponents of marriage equality. Cammissano comes from an Italian Catholic family.

Now that's epic. Love truly knows no borders!

Congratulations to the happy couple as they prepare to begin their marriage journey together, and kudos to Michael Sam for the most badass marriage proposal ever!

Eat your heart out, Pope Francis!

Cue the right-wing outrage in 3... 2... 1...
