slovenia-map.pngOn Tuesday, lawmakers in the former Yugoslav nation of Slovenia legalized marriage and adoption equality -- over the vociferous objections of anti-LGBT groups and the Catholic Church.

Reuters reports:

Parliament passed the law giving same-sex couples the right to marry and adopt children with 51 votes in favor and 28 against.

"This will be a step towards a truly patient and inclusive society with which Slovenia enters the twenty-first century," Matej Tasner Vatovec of center-left opposition party the United Left, which proposed the law, told parliament before the vote.

Two center-right opposition parties and several civic groups fiercely opposed the changes, particularly giving same-sex couples the right to adopt children.

Opponents' referendum efforts are unlikely to succeed, however, because Slovenian law no longer allows referendum votes on human rights issues.

Matej Vatovec, a leftist member of parliament, said the new law will help ensure that Slovenia becomes a "truly tolerant and inclusive community."

"Today Slovenia is entering the 21st century," he added.

If you're a geography nerd like me, and you want to celebrate this news with the Slovenian national anthem, it's embedded after the jump.
