Media director for the Gay Activists Alliance, early l970's. One of the five original founders and first media director of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. Spearheaded final successful movement effort to remove homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Assn.'s list of disorders. Initiated earliest movement contacts with major newspapers, magazines, broadcast networks, wire services, film and television associations & guilds. Wrote first media guide for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
Was active in civil rights and antiwar movements. Served as reporter, editor and reviewer for numerous publications, notably Variety and TV Guide. Has eight true stories in anthology, Queer Stories for Boys. Has been published in New York Times, Los Angeles Times. Village Voice, Dance Magazine, Show Magazine, Hollywood Reporter, etc. Manuscript entitled Polarity: the Psychology of Paul Rosenfels is looking for a publisher. In 2009 was named to Gay & Lesbian Journalists Assn. Hall of Fame.
Has had four significant mated relationships beginning in the l950's, with a Cuban, two Puerto Ricans (the second of whom died of AIDS after a 15 year relationship) and a Bangladeshi, who has shared his life in Bangladesh for half the year for the past 13 years. He is currently barred from sponsoring his mate as a U.S. immigrant due to discriminatory government policy.
He has traveled widely (more than 100 countries to date), and apart from a fairly recent addiction to downloading porn photos from the net, his hobbies consist entirely of record collecting. In more than 60 years he has amassed a collection of nearly 25,000 lps and cds, mostly Western classical music, world music, jazz and blues. Stanford U. has agreed to add this to its collection when the present owner expires.
